On this page
A Bali villa comes with staff, a garden, a pool and a guest who has just landed after fourteen hours in the air and wants to know where the driver is. The messaging job on Bali is less about a lift key card and more about people: the driver, the villa attendant, the pool man, the scooter shop. This page covers who stays, what they ask, what a host has to explain, and what an AI front desk can take off the host.
Who stays in Bali
Australians are the backbone, from school-holiday families in Seminyak and Sanur to surfers in Canggu and Uluwatu. Europeans come for longer stays in the dry season. Indonesian domestic guests fill weekends and public holidays, especially in Ubud and Nusa Dua. Remote workers cluster in Canggu, Pererenan and Ubud by the month. Guests from India, China, Korea and Japan are a growing share.
Most guests write in English; German, French and Russian guests often write in their own language. WhatsApp is the everyday app on the island, staff included.
The questions Bali guests ask most
- The driver. "Can you arrange airport pickup?" and later "can your driver take us to Ubud?" On Bali the host's driver is part of the product.
- Scooters. Where to rent, whether to rent, what licence is needed.
- Water. Whether the tap water is drinkable (no), where the refill gallon is.
- Power cuts. Brief and more common in the rainy season. Guests want to know what to do.
- Villa staff. Who comes when, whether breakfast is included, what the attendant will and will not do.
- Pool. Cleaning schedule, whether it is heated (usually not), whether kids are safe (no lifeguard, say so plainly).
- Early check-in and late checkout. Red-eye flights from Australia land early; evening flights leave late.
- Mosquitoes, geckos and the occasional frog in the pool.
- Temples, dress and ceremonies. What to wear, whether a road will be closed, what Nyepi means.
- Where to eat and the nearest minimart.
Bali specifics a host has to explain
Drivers, not taxis. Most villa guests use a driver the host knows, or Grab and Gojek where they operate. Some areas limit ride-app pickups, so the host's driver matters. Give the contact, say the guest agrees the price with the driver, and keep your own promises out of it.
Scooters. The common way around. Say a proper motorcycle licence is required and that traffic in Canggu and Seminyak is dense. Let the guest decide.
Water. Tap water is not for drinking. Villas keep a gallon dispenser; say where it is and how to get a refill.
Power. Short cuts are normal, more in the rainy season. Show guests the breaker and say the wifi router restarts on its own.
Staff. A villa attendant, a pool cleaner and a gardener each come on a schedule. Guests like to know the days and hours so a stranger in the garden at 7 AM is not a surprise. Say what is included and what is not.
Ceremonies and Nyepi. A street can close for a procession, and the whole island shuts down for Nyepi, the day of silence, with no going out and no lights. A guest who is here for it needs to know in advance.
Seasons. The dry season, roughly April to October, is the busy one, with July and August the European peak and Australian school holidays spread through the year. The rainy season, roughly November to March, has afternoon storms and lower prices; Christmas and New Year are still full.
Replies a Bali host can copy
Airport pickup:
Our driver, Pak [name], can meet you at the arrivals exit with a sign. The villa is about 50 minutes from the airport depending on traffic. You agree the price with him directly; his WhatsApp is [contact]. If you prefer a ride app, Grab and Gojek work at the airport from the designated pickup area.
Water and power:
The tap water is not for drinking. There is a gallon dispenser in the kitchen; when it runs low, message the attendant or us and a new one comes the same day. Short power cuts happen, especially in the rainy season. The breaker box is beside the kitchen door; if the power is off and the neighbours have power, flip the main switch. The wifi comes back on its own.
Staff schedule:
The villa attendant comes daily from 8 to 11 AM to clean and tidy. The pool is cleaned on Mondays and Thursdays in the morning, and the gardener comes on Wednesdays. If you would like a quiet morning, just let us know the day before.
Pool and kids:
The pool is not fenced and there is no lifeguard, so please keep children within arm's reach. The shallow end is at the steps. Pool towels are in the cupboard by the terrace.
What an AI front desk changes for a Bali host
The villa questions above are almost all facts about one property and one set of staff. The host writes them once; the question is who answers at 5 AM when the red-eye from Sydney lands.
Tokay is an AI front desk. Guests keep writing on Airbnb, Booking.com or Vrbo and nothing changes for them. Pam, the front desk agent, answers around the clock in the guest's own language, more than ten languages including German, French, Russian, Mandarin, Japanese and Korean. Knowledge is held at three levels, general, building and apartment: the driver contact and the Nyepi note written once for every villa, the breaker location and staff schedule once per villa.
For the first two weeks every reply comes to the host first, approve, edit or deny with a tap. Then the host switches on what Pam may send alone, one kind of question at a time. A guest unhappy after a stormy week or a request to bring six friends for a pool party always comes to the host, and Pam never promises a discount or refund the host did not agree to.
Sam, the operations agent, writes tomorrow's cleaning brief every night and updates it when a late checkout is approved. One note for Bali: Tokay reaches cleaners and contractors on LINE, and on Bali staff mostly use WhatsApp, so the host should check whether that works for their team before a demo. Tokay does not book drivers or supply staff. Leo sends one message each morning with what happened and what needs the host. On our own apartments this left about two taps a day of guest work. Prices are at /#pricing.
Questions hosts ask
Should I arrange a driver for Bali guests?
Most villa hosts share a trusted driver's contact and let the guest agree the price directly. It answers the first question every guest asks, avoids ride-app limits in some areas, and keeps the host out of pricing promises.
What do I tell guests about power cuts in Bali?
That short cuts are normal, more so in the rainy season, where the breaker is, and that the wifi restarts by itself. Say it in the welcome message so the first storm is not the first time they hear it.
Can an AI answer villa guests in Indonesian or German?
Only if it replies in the guest's own language rather than translating a template, so ask to see the languages you need in a demo. Tokay's front desk agent answers in more than ten languages including German, French, Russian, Mandarin, Japanese and Korean, and every reply comes to the host first for the first two weeks.
